The fallow deer is a medium-sized ungulate native to Europe and Asia Minor. In Spain, it has been introduced as a game species and has successfully adapted to different habitats, such as forests and plains, with a notable presence in Sierra Morena, Alto Tajo and Montes de Toledo. Its coat is reddish-brown in summer and greyish in winter, and the males have characteristic antlers in the shape of “shovels”.
Fallow deer hunting in Spain is very popular with hunters because of their elegant appearance and cautious behavior. The fallow deer hunting season generally takes place in autumn and winter (October to February), with October being the month par excellence, due to the onset of the rut, when the fallow deer produces a short and very low-pitched sound, known as “ronca”.
